01 · The Space

Every image that can exist at this resolution

Each RGB pixel takes one of 256 × 256 × 256 = 16,777,216 values. A grid of W × H pixels therefore has 16,777,216W·H possible states — a finite, complete set containing every photograph ever taken at this resolution, every one that never was, and an ocean of noise in between.

02 · Frame Viewer

Render any frame by its address

Every frame is a number: its index laid out as base-256 bytes across the pixels. The identifier and the image are the same object — which is why duplicates are impossible and why nothing ever needs to be stored.

03 · The Static Channel

Channel-surfing the whole of possibility

Uniform random samples from the space. This is what the dataset overwhelmingly is: for every meaningful image, there are more frames of pure noise than there are atoms in the universe, squared, and then some.

04 · Address a Photograph

Every image you have ever seen already has a coordinate

Drop in any photograph. It will be fitted to the current space and reversed into its index — the exact position it has always occupied in the set. The photo isn't added to the dataset; it is found there. A camera is a device for looking up addresses.

05 · Islands of Meaning

How far does meaning reach into the noise?

Take a meaningful frame and corrupt a growing fraction of its pixels — each corrupted pixel jumps to a random neighbor address. Meaning survives astonishing damage, then dissolves. These islands of recognizability are real regions of the space — and they are immeasurably small next to the ocean.

06 · The Dissolve

The territory between two photographs

Pick two frames. Every path between them — every morph, every film cut, every animation ever made — lies entirely inside the set. Here are three different roads between the same two addresses. Every intermediate frame is a member, with its own address.

07 · Coordinates

Exchange addresses, not images

Export the viewer's current frame as a coordinate card — its exact index, compressed. Anyone with the card re-renders the identical frame from the address alone. And watch what compression reveals: a photograph's address shrinks dramatically; a noise frame's address will not shrink at all. Meaning is compressibility.

Try both: address a photograph, open it in the viewer, export. Then press random in the viewer and export again — compare the two coordinate sizes.

10 · A Film's Path

Every movie ever made is a scribble across this space

A video is a sequence of frames — a polyline through the set, one vertex per frame. Drop in a video and see its trajectory: consecutive frames are visual neighbors (tiny pixel changes), but the enumeration doesn't care. All of cinema, every film ever shot, is a sparse scribble that touches a vanishing fraction of the space.

11 · The Witness Registry

First witnesses

Almost every frame this page shows you has never been seen before — which makes you its first witness. Claim what you discover: each claim is cryptographically signed with a key generated in this browser that never leaves your machine. This matters beyond play: since every possible fake already exists in the set, no frame can prove anything about itself — detection is mathematically doomed. What a frame cannot fake is a signature on a witnessing: proof that someone vouched for this frame at this moment. Provenance, not detection. The public ledger has begun — see the archive below.

The Specimen Archive — the public ledger

Frames witnessed and submitted by pull request. There is no database: the repository is the ledger, and the git history is the provenance chain. Every specimen is verifiable from its coordinate and signature alone.

12 · Your Words Already Had a Number

Every sentence is a frame; every frame is a number

Type anything. Rendered as pixels, it becomes a frame of the current space — a frame with an address it has held since before language existed. Writing, like photography, is a way of pointing at coordinates that were always there.

13 · Rituals

Shared coordinates in the unshareable

The space is too large for two people to ever meet in it by chance. So meet on purpose. A date — or a phrase — deterministically selects one frame out of 108,426,913: the same one for every person on Earth who looks.
